Leyto

Bio

Born in 1980 in Saint-Brieux, Goulwen “Leyto” Mahé made his mark in the graffiti scene of Brittany during the ’90s. His canvas extends beyond traditional boundaries, encompassing city walls, abandoned industrial sites, and various other surfaces that cross his path. Deeply fascinated by signs and symbols, Leyto intentionally challenges conventional graffiti norms to craft his unique graphic system. Stemming from his experiences with “tags,” “flops,” and “throw-ups” on the streets, Leyto’s writing is both sensitive and instinctive, a fusion of dexterity and rapid execution inherent in these emblematic graffiti disciplines. Inspired by artistic luminaries like Pollock, De Kooning, Alechinsky, and Dotremont, Leyto’s writing evolves beyond conventional lettering systems. Through improvisation, it transforms into a lyrical abstraction structured by sharp or rounded shapes, at times forceful, always poetic. Leyto’s nomadic spirit, influenced by diverse cultures from his travels and residences, serves as a constant wellspring of inspiration. Whether in his vibrant abstract paintings or expansive wall frescoes, Leyto invites us into an expressionist realm where color supports the line, acting as both writer and artist in this captivating visual narrative.
